2017 World Champion Lewis Hamilton deserves a knighthood after snatching his fourth world title, former F1 driver Nigel Mansell believes.
Hamilton wrapped up the Championship last weekend at the Mexican Grand Prix, in a dramatic race where he collided with championship rival Sebastian Vettel on the first lap.
After charging up through the field from last to ninth, the Brit secured enough points to secure the championship with two more races to go this season. According to Mansell, Hamilton should be “revered” for this achievement.
When asked if Hamilton should receive a knighthood for this achievement, Mansell replied: “I think he deserves everything he gets.
“Lewis, for me, is a breath of fresh air. He crosses so many boundaries, he’s a nice lad and he’s misunderstood at times.
“I think now he should be revered in every way he can be.”
By claiming his fourth title, Hamilton has now secured a place in the record books as the most successful British driver of all time, overtaking Sir Jackie Stewart.
The Brit is also edging close to Michael Schumacher’s record seven titles, and with 61 victories, is also catching up to Schumacher’s 91.
“Lewis is one of the greats,” Mansell added.
“I forecasted it a few years ago, that I think Lewis can beat all the records, he’s that good. He can be the best of the best of the best.
“I think he can go on to win eight world titles.”
