Former Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg believes that his former team should consider signing Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel once his contract is up with the Italian team.
Going into 2017, the German enters the final season of his current contract with Ferrari, meaning that he will be part of the ‘silly season’ regarding drivers at the end of the year.
Valtteri Bottas, who has replaced recent retiree Rosberg, has been initially signed for a one-year contract, which means that he will face scrutiny at the end of the season as to wether or not the Finn will earn another season with the team.
Whilst speaking at the recent Laureus World Sport Awards, Rosberg mentioned that Mercedes should consider Vettel for the 2018 season.
“It would definitely make sense for Sebastian to have a look at that Mercedes seat for 2018 and for Mercedes to have a look at him and to consider him,” Rosberg spoke.
“For 2018, that’s obvious. He’s one of the best drivers out there and he doesn’t have a contract for 2018, so they should explore the possibility and who knows, let’s see what happens. It could be a good thing.”
Another driver that has been been linked with a 2018 Mercedes driver is McLaren’s Fernando Alonso, as he also enters the final season of his current deal.
“Of course, Alonso, they need to keep him in mind even though he’s not the youngest out there anymore,” Rosberg added.
“He’s still driving at his best, I think, it looks like from what we have seen, so he should be considered as well and I’m sure he will.“
