Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff is urging Renault to sign Esteban Ocon for the 2017 racing season.
Ocon is said to be the next teenager to make his mark in Formula 1, and is currently part of the Mercedes development programme.
Backed by Mercedes, Ocon is on loan to Renault as a reserve driver, and has often driven for them in Friday practices.
International media sources claim that the young Frenchman is next in line to replace Manor’s Rio Haryanto following the summer break, which will allow Mercedes to directly compare him to Haryanto’s teammate and Mercedes junior driver Pascal Wehrlein.
Wolff is also pressing for Renault to promote Ocon for a full racing seat for next season.
“Esteban has an impeccable personality- he really is a nice and intelligent young man. And his performance in the car is extraordinary,” Wolff spoke to French broadcaster Canal Plus.
“He did two sensational test days with us at Silverstone and we saw that he did the same time as [Kevin] Magnussen in Friday free practice, so he is someone who has a big future,”
“I hope that my colleagues realise all of this, otherwise it will be us who will be taking him back!”
