Ocon targets 2017 F1 seat

Esteban Ocon has reported that he is aiming for a seat in Formula 1 in 2017, following two days of testing with Mercedes at Silverstone, as part of the mid-season testing.

The French driver is currently a GP3 champion, is backed by Mercedes, and also drove for Renault in place of driver Kevin Magnussen in FP1 during the British Grand Prix. The Frenchman finished nineteenth, ahead of Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson, Manor’s Pascal Wehrlein and Rio Haryanto.

In the testing yesterday, Ocon finished second in the Mercedes, 0.547 seconds behind Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, and has reported that he feels ready to make the leap to Formula 1 next season.

My target is to be in Formula 1 next year, so I’m working as much as I can and getting ready,” Ocon reported.

At the moment, it’s still too early to speak about that. I still have outings in FP1 that I will have to do. We will have to keep working on that and focus there. The team was happy [with his performance]. I’ve been there for a long time around the Formula 1 paddock, so yeah, I’m ready to race whenever there is an opportunity.

After a solid performance in the FP1 session of the British Grand Prix and two days of testing in the Mercedes I am sure he will be one to watch in the sport soon.
