Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton is set to receive a 5 place gird penalty at the next Grand Prix in China following an unscheduled gearbox change.
The damage to Hamilton’s gearbox was discovered by the team after the race in Bahrain, where he collided with Williams’ Valtteri Bottas.
Mercedes stated that the decision to replace the gearbox took into account the fact that the circuit at Shanghai is more well-suited for overtaking than the next few circuits on the racing calendar.
“The gearbox of [Hamilton’s] F1 W07 Hybrid sustained damage in Bahrain which required a physical inspection for full assessment,” Mercedes confirmed via Twitter. “Having done so, the decision has been taken to change the gearbox rather than carry any risk moving forwards. Of the next four tracks in the normal cycle, Shanghai is the best place to make the change and take the resulting grid penalty.”
Over the course of the last two years, Hamilton has come home in 1st place at the Chinese Grand Prix, and has a total of 4 victories there, a title that no other driver can match. The Brit is yet to win this season however, as teammate Nico Rosberg has beaten him to 1st over the last two races.
