Maria Teresa de Filippis, F1’s first female driver has died, aged 89, on 8th January 2016.
She started three Grand Prix’s for Maserati in 1958, with her best finish being 10th at the Belgian Grand Prix.

De Filippis was the first of several females in the sport, including Lella Lombardi and Giovanna Amati, who competed in a race weekend, where they attempted to qualify.
In recent years, there have been other female drivers such as Maria de Villota and Susie Wolff, who made test appearances, neither of whom where in a position to qualify.
De Villota died in 2013 afters sustained life-threataning head injures.
